What is the Winnebago County Labor Council AFL-CIO?

The Winnebago County Labor Council (WCLC) was given it’s charter in 1958 by the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO.

The establishment of this Local Central Body as a subordinate unit of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations was an expression of the desire of the Unions of this community to participate fully in the achievement of the objectives of the parent Federation (AFL-CIO) as it seeks to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the working people of all America.

The Council is comprised of delegates who are members of unions, labor organizations or labor associations from within Winnebago County Wisconsin that are affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the WCLC. Currently we have thirty-one affiliated unions and associations represented by the WCLC. By being united, we are stronger than if we stand alone.

The Council meets at 7:00pm on the Fourth Tuesday of every month in the Oshkosh Labor Hall located at 2211 Oregon Street Suite #A3 Oshkosh, Wisconsin 54901.

At these meetings delegates discuss area’s of mutual interest to the local labor community. National issues are also addressed at these meetings. Issues such as wage standards, contract negotiations, media campaigns, strike strategies, product or service boycotts, safety procedures, legislative agendas and community service are a regular part of the meetings. Many times Resolutions are passed by the WCLC by voting on issues of mutual concern. By bringing representatives of these various groups together to engage in roundtable discussions, creative solutions to many problems are achieved. In addition to this type of activity, political candidates are endorsed. Questionnaires are sent out to the various local politicians and endorsements are made based on the responses to the questionnaires and direct interview.

The WCLC also plays a very active part in local community services through joint efforts with the Oshkosh Area United Way. The American Red Cross blood drives in February, the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Center’s "Helping Hand at Halloween" drive and the "Labor Day of Caring" in April are all assisted by the WCLC.

Annual events include our Solidarity Dinner/ Workers Memorial Day in April and the September Labor Day picnic in South Park .

This website was designed to allow Union labor people to exchange idea's and information that effect their daily lives. If you have comments or input that you would like to send us there is a contact section on the last page of this site. We intend to regularly update the site with timely legislative issues and local events.

WCLC Endorses Candidates for April Elections

The Winnebago County Labor Council, the local AFL-CIO chapter, held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 26th for the purpose of endorsing individuals running for local and State offices in the April 1st election.
Candidates for office were sent questionnaires to answer and the following candidates were endorsed by the WCLC:
Wisconsin State Supreme Court: Louis Butler
Court of Appeals District II Judge: Lisa Neubauer
Oshkosh School Board: Tom McDermott and John Lemberger.
Winnebago County Board District 15: Travis Swanson
Winnebago County Board District 18: Bill Wingren
The questionnaire included individual positions on the Tax Payers Bill of Rights (TABOR), tax incentive accountability and economic development, new ideas for attracting and maintaining good paying jobs, the right to organize, shared revenue reductions, privatization, gender equity, and prevailing wage laws.

Council President Stephen Dedow stated that “All the candidates who returned the questionnaire gave thoughtful, honest and considerate answers to our questions. The individuals we ended up endorsing simply were closer philosophically to our overall position as organized labor and as such would represent our concerns effectively”.

The Institute for Wisconsin's Future is a grass roots organization that is not afraid the take on the dreaded Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce special interest lobby group. The Institute is currently gearing up to launch legislation which would require large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes and thereby give Wisconsin's working families some much needed tax relief. Check out their website at http://www.wisconsinsfuture.org

Another great site is the recently launched AFL-CIO paywatch.org This site lets you know how much corporate CEO's are making compared to the rest America's working families.

WCLC Officers Politically Active

Winnebago County Labor Council Secretary Sara Stichert and Treasurer Paulette Feld were everywhere during the most recent election. Phone banks, yard signs, lit drops, you name it. These two got the job done!

For the first time in over twenty years Oshkosh's 54th State Assembly District will be represented by a Democrat! Freshman State Representative Gordon Hintz will be going to Madison because of the hard work of people like Sara and Paulette.

Our hats off and a big thank you to all of you who were insane enough to commit yourselves to what is affectionately known as the American Political Process!!!
